Guided tour of the Luxembourg gardens

The Luxembourg gardens, located between the Latin quarter, Saint-Sulpice and Montparnasse, is one of the most coveted garden of the city. Though, in the past this place would rather give people the shivers…

Indeed, well before Mary of Medici made it a somptuous garden around the mansion she bought to the duke François de Luxembourg, Carthusian monks settled in the southern part of the current garden, in a place called the Green valley (or “Vauvert”) greenish land which used to belong to Gentilly village ; before that time, that place had been chosen by Robert the Pious in the XIth century after his excommunication, to have his retirement. After his death, his castle falled apart and quickly became a haunted place, notably by the Devil Vauvert…

Despite all the damages the garden knew during centuries, each corner of the Luco -as the Parisians say- reveals a surprise : the romantic Medici “grotto”, the beautiful perspective drawn by the french gardens, orange-trees, palm trees, pink laurels, an apiary? an orchard…
